Ahmed M El-Eshmawi, MBChB
About Me
Ahmed El-Eshmawi, MD, is an Associate Professor in the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and an attending surgeon as well as the Clinical Director of the Mitral Valve Repair Reference Center at Mount Sinai. His main interest is to ensure that all patients suffering from mitral valve disease will receive the best operation and clinical care possible.
Dr. El-Eshmawi joined the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at Mount Sinai in 2010 as a Senior Clinical Fellow working with Dr. David H. Adams, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery. Over his 3-year advanced fellowship, he focused on the surgical management of patients with complex valvular heart disease with particular interest on mitral valve surgery, less invasive approaches for mitral valve repair and reoperative cardiac surgery.
Under the tutelage of Dr. Adams, Dr. El-Eshmawi has developed experience with almost all aspects of mitral valve disease including exposure to almost all aspects of degenerative mitral valve repair through less invasive approaches.
Dr. El-Eshmawi also worked closely with Dr. Ani Anyanwu, Professor, Vice-Chairman and Director of the Mechanical Assist Devices and Heart Transplant Program where he participated in various surgical procedures for patients with end stage heart failure including permanent ventricular assist devices implantation, total artificial heart and heart transplantation.
Dr. El-Eshmawi obtained a Bachelor's degree in medicine in 2000 and had his cardiothoracic surgery residency and board certification at the University of Alexandria, Egypt where he also worked as a faculty member, lecturer and an attending surgeon in the cardiothoracic surgery department. He focused extensively on the surgical management of highly prevalent cardiac diseases including rheumatic valvular heart disease, coronary artery disease, congenital and adult congenital cardiac surgeries; other areas of clinical interest. Dr. El-Eshmawi obtained a Master's degree in Video-Assisted Thoracic surgery as well a PhD degree in surgery.
In 2007, Dr. El-Eshmawi received a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange service, a prestigious award given to a young researcher, which sponsored him for postgraduate training in the cardiac surgery center of Erlangen, Germany where he received further advanced training in cardiac surgery particularly in congenital heart disease. He then changed his destination to Mount Sinai and Dr. Adams along his continuous seeking for further educational and training experiences in the arena of modern cardiac surgery.
He is fluent in English, German and Arabic.

Patient Experience Star Ratings and Comments
The Patient Experience Star Rating reflects our patients’ perception of how well their Mount Sinai provider communicated with them during an office visit. The Star Rating is based on patient responses to three questions on a patient experience survey, a standardized questionnaire sent to verified patients and distributed by a third party vendor, Press Ganey. Responses are measured on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the best score.
Very happy with Dr Ahmed's advice and his concern.
Industry Relationships
Physicians and scientists on the faculty of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai often interact with pharmaceutical, device, biotechnology companies, and other outside entities to improve patient care, develop new therapies and achieve scientific breakthroughs. In order to promote an ethical and transparent environment for conducting research, providing clinical care and teaching, Mount Sinai requires that salaried faculty inform the School of their outside financial relationships.
Dr. El-Eshmawi has not yet completed reporting of Industry relationships.
Mount Sinai’s faculty policies relating to faculty collaboration with industry are posted on our website. Patients may wish to ask their physician about the activities they perform for companies.
