Alan H Friedman, MD

Alan H. Friedman, M.D., is Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology and Pathology at The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He received his undergraduate degree from Cornell University, BA with Honors in Chemistry, and his M.D. from New York University School of Medicine. He did an Internship in Straight Medicine at Bellevue Hospital in New York and then served for two years as a captain in the United States Army Medical Corps. Following military service he trained in Ophthalmology at New York University Medical Center followed a Fellowship in Ophthalmic Pathology at New York University. Following this phase of training he served as Assistant and then Associate Professor of Ophthalmology and Pathology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine/ Montefiore Hospital and Medical Center. During this time, he spent a year at The Royal Postgraduate Medical School at Hammersmith Hospital in London, England studying under Professor A.G.E Pearse. He was appointed Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology and Pathology at The Mount Sinai Medical Center in 1977.

He has given The Herman Krieger Goldberg Lecture, The Robert S. Coles Memorial Lecture at the New York Academy of Medicine and the Lorenz E. Zimmerman Lecture at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology in New Orleans in November, 2007. He has been Visiting Professor of Ophthalmology at Wills Eye Hospital, Tufts-New England Medical Center and The University of Pittsburgh. He was Guest-of Honor at The Pan-Hellenic Ophthalmology Society Annual Meeting, The Italian Ophthalmology Society Annual Meeting and The European Ophthalmic Pathology Society. He has lectured widely in New York City and elsewhere. He is a member of The American Ophthalmological Society, The Verhoeff-Zimmerman Society (President, 2006), The Eastern Ophthalmic Pathology Society (President, 1997), The American Association of Ophthalmic Pathologists (President 1992-1994),  The American Uveitis Society, The International Uveitis Study Group, The American Academy of Ophthalmology (Honor and Senior Honor Awards), The New York Ophthalmological Society and The Manhattan Ophthalmological Society. He is a Fellow of The Royal College of Ophthalmologists.

He is author or co-author of over 200 articles and textbooks. He was co-author of Congenital Fundus Lesions (with Juan Orellana, M.D.), Diagnosis and Management of Uveitis  (with Maurice Luntz, M.D., and Walter Henley, M.D.) and was co-author and editor of Intraocular Tumors and Uveitis (The American Academy of Ophthalmology 1978-1988). He has held grants from the National Eye Institute (as co-investigator) and was a participant in The Studies of Ocular Complications of AIDS.
