Andrea E Dunaif, MD
Internal Medicine, Endocrine, Diabetes and Bone Diseases (Endocrinology)
About Me
Andrea Dunaif, M.D., is the Lillian and Henry M. Stratton Professor of Molecular Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York, NY. She was the System Chief of the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Bone Disease for the Mount Sinai Health System from 2017-2025. She obtained her M.D. from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and completed her Internal Medicine training at Presbyterian Hospital in New York City, as well as her subspecialty training in Endocrinology and Metabolism at the Massachusetts General Hospital. She has held senior academic leadership roles in endocrinology and women’s health at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and Northwestern University, where she served as Division Chief and directed the NIH-supported Specialized Center of Research on Sex Differences.
Dr. Dunaif’s research has reshaped the understanding of the fundamental links between metabolism and reproduction by establishing polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) as a major metabolic disorder and leading risk factor for early-onset type 2 diabetes. She elucidated a defect in insulin signaling that provided a mechanistic framework for PCOS-associated insulin resistance. She has led genomic studies that identified PCOS susceptibility loci, rare and regulatory causal variants, and genetically distinct PCOS subtypes derived from data-driven phenotypic clustering. She has held continuous NIH funding as a principal investigator for more than three decades and has authored approximately 200 scientific articles and book chapters.
Her contributions to the field have been recognized with numerous prestigious awards, including the Endocrine Society Clinical Investigator Award, an honorary Doctorate from the University of Athens Medical School, and the Mount Sinai Faculty Council Lifetime Achievement Award. She has been elected to both the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians. She is ranked among the foremost researchers in Medicine worldwide by Research.com and ScholarGPS. She has served as an Associate Editor for The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism and Obesity, chaired many NIH review panels, and served on the NIH Office of Research on Women’s Health Advisory Committee. She is a former President of the Endocrine Society.
