Arooba Ahmed

About Me

Arooba is a first year MD-PhD student from Long Island, New York. She graduated from Columbia University with a major in Biochemistry. At Columbia University, she was in the lab of Jean Gautier where she led a project on the mechanisms of DNA repair in the context of cancer biology. Specifically, she researched the roles of Translesion Synthesis polymerases and the protein UVSSA in Interstrand Crosslink (ICL) repair and found that both are crucial to the repair process. She has published two papers on her work, the first in the Journal of Molecular Biology and the second in the journal “DNA Repair.”

As an MSTP student, she is planning on being involved in the Radiation Oncology Interest group, volunteering at EHHOP, and assisting with MSTP admissions. Her research interests currently align with studying cancer immunology and she hopes to join the Immunology Multidisciplinary Training Area.

Outside of the academic setting, Arooba loves documenting her food journey on the app Beli where she has reviewed almost 300 restaurants in the Northeast.
