About Me
Dr. Baron Lonner is a Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. Dr. Lonner’s central clinical interest is caring for patients with scoliosis and other spinal deformities using both operative and nonoperative treatments. His approach to patients and their families is a holistic one in which the patient’s quality of life, values, and perspective are at the forefront of decision-making about the patient’s treatment options.
Dr. Lonner has performed over 3,000 surgeries in pediatric and adult scoliosis patients including primary and revision surgeries. He has been an innovator in the area of minimally invasive surgery of the spine for scoliosis, kyphosis, and other conditions. In addition, he has embarked on a pursuit of non-fusion scoliosis care through anterior vertebral body tethering techniques.
With over 120 publications in the orthopedic literature, Dr. Lonner’s research interests include outcomes in spinal deformity surgery and nonoperative care. He and his team have developed two new outcome instruments for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. Dr. Lonner has a keen interest in the interplay of cost and quality and the value equation in spine care. He is a reviewer for four spine journals, and he is an associate editor on the editorial board of the Journal of Spinal Deformity. Dr. Lonner is a board member of the Scoliosis Research Society and the Setting Scoliosis Straight Foundation.
Dr. Lonner has traveled extensively in developing countries of Africa, the Middle East, and the Caribbean where he has performed operations on children with severe spinal deformities in. He is a consultant for Depuy Synthes and Johnson and Johnson companies, and he is one of the developers of the Expedium spinal implant system used in the treatment of scoliosis and other spinal deformities.
