About Me
Daniel G. Nicastri, MD (former Commander, U.S. Navy), a decorated military veteran, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Thoracic Surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He was born in Brooklyn, and is a graduate of Dartmouth College, and the New York University School of Medicine. After completing his General Surgery Residency at Mount Sinai he went on to serve one year abroad in Guantanamo Bay as the Staff Surgeon. There, he received the Joint Service Achievement, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement, and Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary medals. Following this military assignment, he completed a cardiothoracic surgery residency at New York Presbyterian—Weill Cornell, and a minimally invasive fellowship at Mount Sinai.
He next spent 3 years with the U.S. Navy on Active Duty. While stationed in the D.C. area, he was a staff thoracic surgeon at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and also served the Fort Belvoir Community Hospital as Chief of Thoracic Surgery, and Chairman of the Cancer Care Committee. During this time, he deployed to the distinguished NATO Role 3 Trauma Hospital in Kandahar, Afghanistan. There, as Department Head of Surgery, he received the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation, Afghanistan Campaign, Overseas Service, and NATO, medals and ribbons.
He joined Mount Sinai in 2014, after completing his Navy Active Duty service. As a board-certified Thoracic and General surgeon, his expertise includes minimally invasive lung and esophageal surgery, thoracic trauma, as well as robotic surgery. He has published extensively concerning early lung cancer screening and surgery, minimally invasive (VATS) lung cancer surgery, lung cancer surgery outcomes, chest wall tumors, and tracheal surgery in both peer-reviewed journals and textbooks.
He currently sees patients in Manhattan and Westchester and has been designated a Castle Connolly Top Doctor in 2020 and 2021.
