Daniel M Herron, MD

Dr. Herron is an internationally recognized general and bariatric surgeon, with extensive experience in laparoscopic and robotic operations. He serves as the System Chief of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery at the Mount Sinai Health System and leads the Garlock Division of General Surgery. In his appointment as the Salky Professor of Surgery, he directs the Clinical Fellowship in Advanced Gastrointestinal/MIS/Bariatric Surgery and has trained 36 laparoscopic/bariatric fellows since 1999. He has published extensively in both laparoscopic and bariatric surgery and serves as Associate Editor of the primary American bariatric journal Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases (SOARD).
Dr. Herron’s clinical practice focuses on both bariatric and advance gastrointestinal surgery. He utilizes laparoscopic and robotic surgical techniques for bariatric operations including sleeve gastrectomy and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass as well as bariatric revisions and conversions. Additionally, he has extensive experience treating hernias of the abdominal wall and diaphragm. He has specialty training in anti-reflux surgery including Nissen fundoplication and hiatal hernia repairs. Additionally, he has over 25 years’ experience in laparoscopic donor nephrectomy (kidney donor procedures).

 

After receiving his undergraduate degree in Computer Science from Harvard College in 1987 and his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1992, Dr. Herron completed a residency in general surgery at Tufts University–New England Medical Center. He additionally completed a research fellowship in general surgery at Tufts and a clinical fellowship in laparoscopic surgery at Legacy Health System in Portland, Oregon with Lee L. Swanstrom.

An active leader in the field of minimally invasive surgery, Dr. Herron has served on the SAGES Board of Governors for a total of 12 years and has sat on the Executive Council as a Vice President and chaired numerous SAGES committees. He completed 2 years of service on the Board of Directors and served as the treasurer of the Fellowship Council. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and served as chair of the Video-based Education Committee. He is a Fellow of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. Dr. Herron has maintained a longstanding interest in surgical devices and information technology and previously served as the Vice Chair for Surgical Technology at Mount Sinai.
