Daniel I Steinberg, MD

Daniel I. Steinberg, MD, SFHM, FACP is the Chief Patient Safety Officer for Mount Sinai Downtown, which includes Mount Sinai Beth Israel, the New York Eye & Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai, Mount Sinai Downtown Union Square and The Blavatnik Family Chelsea Medical Center of Mount Sinai.

He is Associate Dean for Quality and Patient Safety in Graduate Medical Education for the Mount Sinai Health System, and Professor of Medicine and Professor of Medical Education at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He has been a practicing hospitalist since 2002. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

From 2009 to 2020, Dr. Steinberg was Associate Chair for Education and Internal Medicine Residency Program Director in the Department of Medicine at Mount Sinai Beth Israel. Dr. Steinberg earned his medical degree at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University. He completed Internal Medicine Residency at Mount Sinai Beth Israel in 2001 and then served a year as a Chief Medical Resident.

His academic interests include quality and safety in medical education, professional development of trainees, clinical medicine and clinical application of the research literature. He has served as Editor or an Associate Editor for multiple texts, including A Textbook for Internal Medicine Education Programs (10th Edition), A Textbook for Today’s Chief Medical Resident (19th Edition) and Evidence—Based Medical Consultation (Saunders, 2007.) He is an Associate Editor for the American College of Physicians Journal Club, which appears as a regular section in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine.

He is regularly invited to speak at national professional society meetings, including the Society of Hospital Medicine, the Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine and the Society of General Internal Medicine. He was President of the Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine New York Special Interest Group for the 2015-2016 term. Dr. Steinberg is the recipient of the ACGME's 2021 Parker J. Palmer Courage To Teach Award.

Dr. Steinberg is Chair of the Society of Hospital Medicine's Annual Conference Committee and is the Course Director for the 2021 Society of Hospital Medicine Annual Conference.
