Emmanuel During, MD
Neurology
About Me
Dr. During is Clinical Associate Professor of neurology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai with a dual appointment in the Department of Neurology – Division of Movement Disorders, and Department of Medicine – Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care & Sleep Medicine. He trained in neurology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and psychiatry at Paris Diderot University, and completed a sleep medicine fellowship at the Stanford University. Dr. During studies and treats all sleep conditions associated with neurological disease, including sleep disturbances associated with neurodegenerative disease and normal aging, abnormal dreams or behaviors such as dream-enactment due to REM sleep behavior disorder, sleepwalking, sleep terrors (parasomnias), restless legs syndrome (RLS), abnormal daytime sleepiness due to narcolepsy or other hypersomnias, and disorders causing dysregulation of the sleep-wake control system (circadian disorders, insomnia).

His research focus is REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD), more specifically RBD associated with neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's or dementia with Lewy bodies. Dr. During has received federal and industry grant support for conducting research on RBD and Parkinson’s disease. He served as principal investigator on a clinical trial evaluating a new therapy for treatment-resistant RBD (NCT04006925), and site PI on a NIH funded nationwide consortium, the North American Prodromal Synucleinopathy Consortium (NAPS), laying the groundwork for Parkinson's disease prevention trials. He was on a Task Force commissioned by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) to issue the 2022 Clinical Guidelines for the management of RBD, and is a member of the International RBD Study Group (IRBD-SG) – a group of world-experts in RBD ranging from clinicians to basic scientists. Dr. During’s current focus is the development of scalable strategies to detect RBD and early signs of Parkinson’s disease in the general population using wearable devices (wrist-worn sleep trackers).

Patient Experience Star Ratings and Comments
The Patient Experience Star Rating reflects our patients’ perception of how well their Mount Sinai provider communicated with them during an office visit. The Star Rating is based on patient responses to three questions on a patient experience survey, a standardized questionnaire sent to verified patients and distributed by a third party vendor, Press Ganey. Responses are measured on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the best score.
Industry Relationships
Physicians and scientists on the faculty of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai often interact with pharmaceutical, device, biotechnology companies, and other outside entities to improve patient care, develop new therapies and achieve scientific breakthroughs. In order to promote an ethical and transparent environment for conducting research, providing clinical care and teaching, Mount Sinai requires that salaried faculty inform the School of their outside financial relationships.
Dr. During has not yet completed reporting of Industry relationships.
Mount Sinai’s faculty policies relating to faculty collaboration with industry are posted on our website. Patients may wish to ask their physician about the activities they perform for companies.
