Dr. Lema specializes in medical and surgical treatment of retinal diseases, and is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He completed his medical training as part of the Medical Scientist Training Program at the University at Buffalo Jacobs School of Medicine. After an internship at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, he went on to residency in Ophthalmology at the Ross Eye Institute, University at Buffalo. He completed his fellowship in retinal surgery at the Flaum Eye Institute, University of Rochester. Before joining New York Eye and Ear of Mount Sinai, he was the Director of the Retina Service at the Ross Eye institute.
Dr. Lema is an active Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He completed the Leadership Development Program in 2018, and serves as a Councilor of the AAO. He was nominated to the Phi Beta Kappa and Gold Humanism in Medicine Honor Societies. He has published numerous papers and lectures nationally and internationally.
Based on his personable approach to patient care, Dr. Lema joined Mount Sinai as the Site Director for Quality, Safety, and Patient Experience for the department of Ophthalmology.
