About Me
Gururaj Shan, MD, is an Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine and Associate Medical Director of The Mount Sinai Hospital Emergency Department.
As Associate Medical Director, Dr. Shan leads operational, quality, and process improvement initiatives for a high-volume academic emergency department. His work focuses on improving patient throughput, standardizing clinical operations, and designing scalable care pathways that enhance efficiency, safety, and interdisciplinary coordination. He has served as a physician leader for the emergency departments multi-year renovation and has led initiatives focused on triage redesign, ED boarding workflows, telemetry utilization, and real-time operational analytics.
Dr. Shan partners with Health System leaders on documentation optimization to improve quality, coding accuracy, and financial performance. He helped lead implementation of a high-sensitivity troponin acute coronary syndrome pathway across the emergency department service line and contributed to system-wide efforts to standardize cardiac monitoring practices.
Dr. Shan graduated from Cooper Medical School. He completed his Emergency Medicine residency at SUNY Downstate/Kings County Hospital, where he served as Chief Resident, followed by a Healthcare Leadership and Management Fellowship at New York-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center. During fellowship, he focused on healthcare operations and care transition innovation, including expansion of a community paramedicine program to support high-risk patients following emergency department discharge. As an Assistant Professor, Dr. Shan is deeply committed to academic medicine and mentorship, educating the next generation of healthcare leaders on the principles of administrative excellence, health policy, and operational strategy.
