Dr. Stratyner is widely known for developing and implementing the groundbreaking clinical model of Carefrontation,” a treatment approach that doesn’t shame or blame the patient, but recognizes addiction as a disease and stresses each patient’s responsibility to work with healthcare providers to reach the goal of complete abstinence.
Before joining the Caron Treatment Centers, Dr. Stratyner established himself as a leader in treating addiction by serving for seven years as the Program Director for Addiction/Recovery Services at Payne Whitney Westchester and Clinical Division Director of Psychiatry at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. During that time, he was also Assistant Professor of Psychology at Weill Medical College of Cornell University. He played an integral role in developing the internationally-acclaimed Retreat at Westchester, a cutting-edge rehabilitation center that treats executives, celebrities, and other high-profile individuals, who, given their visibility, might otherwise not seek treatment.
An innovative clinician, Dr. Stratyner is also a musician and has worked to incorporate the arts into the practice of psychology. For over 16 years, he has been the host of “Here’s to Your Good Health,” an acclaimed weekly radio show on WFAS-AM. Dr. Stratyner has built a reputation as an authority on substance abuse and has been interviewed by major media outlets, including the New York Times, the Daily News, Self magazine, ABC, NBC, and CBS. He is a member of the United Nations’ Non-Governmental Organization on Narcotics and has been a featured speaker at the UN as part of the Bill Moyer’s series on addiction, a PBS special.
Dr. Stratyner has served on the Board of Directors of the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence/Westchester since its inception and is Honorary Academic Director of their CASAC Training Program
Dr. Stratyner also serves on the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence and is the Chairperson of the Westchester County Department of Community Mental Health Subcommittee on Substance Abuse. In recognition of his work in treating addiction, Dr. Stratyner received an Honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters from Mercy College. Most recently, Dr. Stratyner wrote the foreword to the Physician’s Drug Reference (PDR) for Mental Health Professionals and was a collaborator on the book’s new chapter on street drugs. Additionally, Dr. Stratyner co-authored the PDR Guide to Pediatric and Adolescent Mental Health First Edition as well as being guest Editor of CNS Spectrums, October 2006 addition on addiction. Dr. Stratyner is also a credentialed alcohol and substance abuse counselor and a member of the American Psychological Association.
