Irving Levine, MD
Gastroenterology
About Me
Dr. Irving Levine began practicing as a Gastroenterologist in 2023 and joined Mount Sinai in 2024. After completing his undergraduate studies at Yeshiva University, Dr. Levine graduated with his medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine with the Dean's Recognition Award. Dr. Levine then completed his residency in Internal Medicine with NYU Langone Health before moving to Northwell Health for his fellowship in Gastroenterology where he served as Chief Fellow in his final year. To finish his training, Dr. Levine returned to NYU Langone Health for a second fellowship in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). As a double board certified physician by the American Board of Internal Medicine in both Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology, Dr. Levine specializes in Inflammatory Bowel Disease and serves as Director of IBD at Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital.
Throughout his education and training, Dr. Levine engaged in several research initiatives. He extensively researched the role of extraintestinal manifestations of Inflammatory Bowel Disease including arthritis, as well as the impact of IBD on other aspects of healthcare, such as obesity. Dr. Levine has authored and co-authored numerous publications that have been featured in prestigious journals in his field, including Pancreas, BMC Gastroenterology, the World Journal of Gastroenterology, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, the Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, and the International Journal of Colorectal Disease.
In his professional community, Dr. Levine is a member of the American Gastroenterology Association (AGA) and the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG), where he served on the ACG Educational Universe Editorial Board in the IBD Division.
When discussing his pathway into medicine, Dr. Levine explains, "I was initially inspired to pursue a career in medicine by my father, who is a doctor and has always been a strong role model for me. I grew up right here on Long Island in a family that valued and emphasized caring for others and contributing to one’s community. I chose to specialize in gastroenterology with a focus on Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) in order to build longstanding physician-patient relationships and help patients navigate these complicated diseases." Dr. Levine continued on to explain, "I believe the best patient outcomes are only possible on the foundation of trust – trust between physician and patient, as well as trust in the healthcare system to prioritize patient care as its number one priority. When I work with patients, I let their values and experiences inform their treatment plan. Only once trust is established, can we begin treating the symptoms and disease. I chose to join the Mount Sinai South Nassau family and return to my Long Island roots, as it has demonstrated its high priority on patient care and experience. I work closely with my gastroenterology colleagues as well as colorectal surgery colleagues in order to provide comprehensive care." Outside of his time with patients, Dr. Levine enjoys outdoor activities with his family, including hiking, swimming, and playing tennis.
