About Me
Ismail Nabeel is a professor in the Department of Environmental Medicine and the Department of Artificial Intelligence and Human Health at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He specializes in internal medicine, occupational/environmental medicine, and clinical and bioinformatics. His work focuses on integrating innovative perspectives and solutions to enhance the health and well-being of workers in diverse environments.
Dr. Nabeel has laid the foundation for research, clinical, and administrative projects aimed at improving work environments. He has developed clinical competencies for Occupational and Environmental Medicine practitioners in the domain of Climate Change and Health. He co-authored ACOEM’s Guidance Statement on Climate Change and Occupational and Environmental Medicine (OEM) practice and the Proposed Mitigation and Adaptation Strategies Related to Climate Change, providing guidance to OEM professionals. His work explores the profound impact of climate change on human health and diseases.
Dr. Nabeel played a crucial role in protecting the medical center workforce during the COVID-19 pandemic by establishing a surveillance system across multiple hospitals to control COVID-19 infections among healthcare employees.
He has extensively worked on data acquisition, analysis, and systematic infrastructure development, enhancing the capabilities of the Electronic Health Record (EMR) system and expediting patient care in occupational medicine clinical practices. Additionally, he developed advanced AI methodologies to decipher pain characteristics in the musculoskeletal domain, potentially improving care for patients with acute to chronic musculoskeletal pain.
Dr. Nabeel is a Fellow of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM), serves as the chair of ACOEM’s Council on Occupational and Environmental Medicine (OEM) Science, and is a member of ACOEM’s board of directors. He spearheaded the development and launch of the internationally recognized ACOEM official podcast “OccPod,” which covers topics ranging from COVID-19 and worker health to climate change. The podcast, featuring special series like ‘Climate Conversations,’ ‘Vaccine Conversations,’ and ‘Resident Conversations,’ engages an international audience and provides insights into cutting-edge developments in Occupational and Environmental Medicine.

Abstract: Development of the Return to Work (RTW) Tool for Primary Care Providers for Low Back Pain Patients Low back pain (LBP) is the most common cause of disability in US adults under the age of 45. Primary care physicians are commonly the first medical practitioners to assess a patient with LBP. Research has now demonstrated that rapid return to normal activities of daily living is generally the best activity recommendation, and a randomized control trial found that in addition to improved function and pain in workers with LBP by implementing a clinical practice guideline in a primary care setting, days of work lost were also reduced. We hypothesize that primary care physicians themselves should be educated on the use of clinical guidelines with regards to LBP management and return to work (RTW) to direct the care of their patients themselves. Therefore, the purpose of our pilot project is to develop such guidelines in the form of an accessible and adaptable tool. Return to Work Guidelines for Low Back Pain Patients in a Primary Care Setting will be developed and integrated into the Electronic Medical Records (EMR) which will be readily used in a primary care setting. Primary care providers will be randomized with or without the integrated tool. Using ICD 10 codes to identify patients with LBP, charts will be retrospectively reviewed to assess if primary care physicians are identifying the type of work, level of disability and recommendations regarding return to work. At 6 months, a statistical analysis will be used to determine if the tool is both adaptable and accessible to be used in the primary care setting. This project has enabled the researchers to expand the field of low back pain management by using evidence-based Return to Work (RTW) strategies and enhancing better understanding of the understudied field of "return to work" by innovative use of informatics principles.

Patient Experience Star Ratings and Comments
The Patient Experience Star Rating reflects our patients’ perception of how well their Mount Sinai provider communicated with them during an office visit. The Star Rating is based on patient responses to three questions on a patient experience survey, a standardized questionnaire sent to verified patients and distributed by a third party vendor, Press Ganey. Responses are measured on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the best score.
