Jaime Chu, MD, has been appointed Chief of the Division of Pediatric Hepatology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and Mount Sinai Kravis Children’s Hospital. A Professor of Pediatrics and the Mount Sinai Endowed Professor of Pediatric Liver Research, Dr. Chu has been a member of the Mount Sinai faculty since 2009 and has served as Associate Division Chief of Pediatric Hepatology since 2018 and Medical Director of Pediatric Liver Transplantation since 2020. Throughout her career at Mount Sinai, she has helped advance the division’s missions in clinical care, research, education, and mentorship, while caring for children with complex liver disease and liver transplantation.
Dr. Chu is an accomplished clinician and nationally recognized physician-scientist whose NIH-funded translational research program focuses on understanding the mechanisms of liver fibrosis and developing new therapies for pediatric liver disease. She has served as site-Principal Investigator for NIH-funded and industry-sponsored clinical trials in pediatric liver disease and has contributed to national practice guidelines for pediatric liver transplantation. She has also made physician-scientist development a major focus of her institutional leadership. Since 2019, she has served as Director of Mount Sinai’s Pediatric Physician-Scientist Residency Program andis a multi-Principal Investigator on two NIH R38 StARR awards that bring NIH support to Mount Sinai to protect research time and foster research training during residency. She also serves as Associate Director of the Medical Scientist Training Program (MD/PhD) and has mentored trainees across the continuum from students and residents to fellows and junior faculty. Nationally, she has held leadership roles within the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, served as Chair and member of NIDDK and NCATS study sections, and was elected a Fellow of the AASLD. Her appointment as Division Chief recognizes her longstanding contributions to clinical excellence in pediatric hepatology and liver transplantation, scientific discovery, mentorship, and the Department of Pediatrics at Mount Sinai.

Dr. Chu runs an R01-funded basic research group that focuses on how sugar metabolism pathways work together to sustain rapid cell growth in liver development and disease. Dr. Chu's long-term goal is to utilize collaborative science and integrate basic and clinical research towards improving our understanding of the mechanisms underlying pediatric liver disease and to apply this knowledge towards the development of much needed therapeutic options for children with liver disease.
