John Psonis, MD, PhD
About Me
John J. Psonis, MD, PhD, is an Instructor in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He is a physician-scientist with a clinical practice encompassing a broad range of infectious diseases and a research focus on respiratory viral pathogenesis.
Dr. Psonis’s research focuses on respiratory virus-host interactions and innate antiviral immunity. He uses human airway epithelial models, single-cell transcriptomics, CRISPR-based functional genomics, and viral engineering to investigate viral tropism, cell type-specific host responses, and mechanisms of viral replication and immune evasion, with the goal of informing new therapeutic strategies.
Dr. Psonis completed his Infectious Diseases fellowship and Internal Medicine residency at Mount Sinai through the ABIM Research Pathway. He received his MD and PhD in Molecular Genetics and Microbiology through the Medical Scientist Training Program at Stony Brook University and earned his BA in Biophysics and Mathematics from the University of Pennsylvania.

Industry Relationships
Physicians and scientists on the faculty of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai often interact with pharmaceutical, device, biotechnology companies, and other outside entities to improve patient care, develop new therapies and achieve scientific breakthroughs. In order to promote an ethical and transparent environment for conducting research, providing clinical care and teaching, Mount Sinai requires that salaried faculty inform the School of their outside financial relationships.
Dr. Psonis has not yet completed reporting of industry relationships or has no industry relationships to report.
Mount Sinai’s faculty policies relating to faculty collaboration with industry are posted on our website. Patients may wish to ask their physician about the activities they perform for companies.
