About Me

Jonathan Schimmel, MD, Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine, is a physician-scientist whose research focuses on the intersection of emergency medicine and medical toxicology as well as clinical drug development and testing.

Dr. Schimmel is a member of the Division of Medical Toxicology in Emergency Medicine and the Mount Sinai Center for Research on Emerging Substances, Poisoning, Overdose, and New Discoveries (RESPOND Center). He serves on the Mount Sinai Health System Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee and leads its Antidote Advisory Council, which sets institutional policies relating to medications. Dr. Schimmel is core faculty in The Mount Sinai Hospital/Elmhurst Emergency Medicine Residency program, for which he provides instruction on medical toxicology topics.

Dr. Schimmel is the Director of the Emergency Medicine Clinical Trials Core, a program with infrastructure and expertise focused on drug and device trials in the acute care setting. This work has included in vitro diagnostics for troponin and hepatitis C, and therapeutics investigations for sickle cell disease, acute pancreatitis, elevated potassium, and COVID-19. He further serves as a Medical Monitor for drug and vaccine trials, for which he is responsible for providing safety oversight of research participants. Dr. Schimmel has been a co-investigator for studies funded by the National Institutes of Health.
