Joseph Yoon, MD, MSc

Joseph Yoon, MD, MSc, MAEd, is a uniquely dual-trained neuro-interventional surgeon and neurointensivist dedicated to providing an unbroken continuum of care for life-threatening neurological emergencies. By bridging the critical gap between the operating room and the intensive care unit, Dr. Yoon delivers complete, start-to-finish care and provides specialized neurocritical management. He ensures that the same expert physician who performs a life-saving intervention also directs the patient’s physiological recovery, eliminating vulnerable handoffs between specialists.

Dr. Yoon brings a foundation of world-class training to Mount Sinai South Nassau, where he is actively directing and training the institution's neurocritical care expertise to build a premier, world-class neuroscience team. An inductee of the elite Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, he completed his rigorous residency at Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts General Hospital, and Brigham & Women’s Hospital. During his tenure, he served as a faculty member at Harvard Medical School, teaching in three distinct neuroscience and neuroanatomy courses over the course of three years. He subsequently pursued dual fellowships in Neurocritical Care and Neuro-Interventional Surgery at the Mount Sinai Health System, earning the prestigious Fellow of the Year Award and graduating early due to his exceptional clinical acumen. 

At the forefront of neurovascular science, Dr. Yoon is a recognized national leader who serves on multiple medical editorial boards and has served on the Neuroscience Steering Committee for the Society of Critical Care Medicine. His pioneering research includes collaborating with a Nobel laureate to develop pre-hospital triage systems that mitigate critical treatment delays for multi-system emergencies. His innovative academic work is frequently published in top-tier medical literature, including the New England Journal of Medicine, Stroke, Neurology, Annals of Neurology, and Journal of Neuro-Oncology. 

Beyond his award-winning clinical excellence, Dr. Yoon is defined by his compassionate patient advocacy. Shaped by his early humanitarian work with the United Nations and nonprofits supporting North Korean refugees, he brings a profound dedication to human dignity and empathetic leadership to his practice. Perfectly bilingual in English and Korean, he navigates the complex intersection of severe neurological disease and systemic health with deep cultural competence.
