Obstetrics and Gynecology, Maternal and Fetal Medicine
About Me
Lois E. Brustman, MD, is Vice Chair for Education and the Director of the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Science at Mount Sinai West. In addition, Dr. Brustman is Professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. She is board certified in maternal-fetal medicine and in obstetrics and gynecology. An expert in all areas of high-risk obstetrics, Dr. Brustman has special clinical interests in diabetes in pregnancy, preterm labor, fetal evaluation, and preconception counseling. Additionally, she has been very active in research into diabetes during pregnancy, including diagnosis, glucose control, treatment, and the effect of hypoglycemic medications on mother and fetus. Dr. Brustman graduated Magna Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa, with a bachelor of science degree in biology from Union College, in Schenectady, New York, in 1975. She earned her medical degree from New York Medical College in 1979, and completed residency training in obstetrics and gynecology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, in the Bronx, in 1984. Dr. Brustman continued at Albert Einstein for fellowship training in maternal-fetal medicine, graduating in 1988. During her fellowship, she was director of the Medical Student Education Program and medical director for the Prematurity Prevention Program. During the 1990’s, she was director of Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Obstetrics, and associate director of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, at Our Lady of Mercy Medical Center. She joined the faculty at Mount Sinai St. Luke’s and Mount Sinai West (then St. Luke’s-Roosevelt) in 2000, and was director of the Residency Program from 2002 until 2019. During her long career, Dr. Brustman has focused on care for her patients, clinical research, and on the teaching and training of young physicians. She has been a research mentor to dozens of residents and fellows across a range of obstetric topics. In 2005, and again in 2014, the obstetrics and gynecology residents at Mount Sinai St. Luke’s and Mount Sinai West chose her as their best teacher, and recipient of the National Faculty Award of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. In 2015, she was inducted as a Fellow with Advanced Membership into the Institute of Medical Education at the Icahn School of Medicine. She is a member of the Society of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, an elected member of the New York Obstetrical Society, and a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Patient Experience Star Ratings and Comments
The Patient Experience Star Rating reflects our patients’ perception of how well their Mount Sinai provider communicated with them during an office visit. The Star Rating is based on patient responses to three questions on a patient experience survey, a standardized questionnaire sent to verified patients and distributed by a third party vendor, Press Ganey. Responses are measured on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the best score.

Industry Relationships
Physicians and scientists on the faculty of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai often interact with pharmaceutical, device, biotechnology companies, and other outside entities to improve patient care, develop new therapies and achieve scientific breakthroughs. In order to promote an ethical and transparent environment for conducting research, providing clinical care and teaching, Mount Sinai requires that salaried faculty inform the School of their outside financial relationships.
Dr. Brustman has not yet completed reporting of Industry relationships.
Mount Sinai’s faculty policies relating to faculty collaboration with industry are posted on our website. Patients may wish to ask their physician about the activities they perform for companies.
