About Me

Maria Cristina Esperanza, MD, is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Pediatric Critical Care in the Jack and Lucy Clark Department of Pediatrics at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and Mount Sinai Kravis Children's Hospital. She also serves as the Director of Pediatric Quality for the division. Dr. Esperanza received her Bachelor of Science and medical degree from the University of the Philippines College of Medicine. She completed her training in General Pediatrics at Rush Presbyterian St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago and Pediatric Critical Care Medicine at Schneider Children’s Hospital, now known as Cohen Children’s Medical Center, in New Hyde Park, NY. She joined their faculty upon the completion of her fellowship. During her tenure there, she served as the Medical Director of Pediatric Transport, Medical Director of the PICU, Director of Quality and Associate Chief of the Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Esperanza led and was a member of several hospital committees with a focus on operations, emergency preparedness, quality and safety. She was heavily involved in performance improvement projects of both the division and hospital including work for the hospital’s Solutions for Patient Safety initiatives. She is a chapter contributor to the 5th edition of Rogers Textbook of Pediatric Intensive Care. Her areas of expertise include transport medicine, emergency preparedness, respiratory failure and high reliability units.
