About Me

Dr. Maria Peña began practicing as an Endocrinologist in 2013. After graduating cum laude and with several scholarships from Sophie Davis School of Biomedicine, Dr. Peña earned her medical degree from New York Medical College. She went on to complete her residency and fellowship at North Shore University Hospital in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology, respectively. In addition to her board certifications in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology, Dr. Peña developed a special interest in weight loss medicine and was 1 of 850 physicians in North American to become board certified in this relatively new field of medicine.

Prior to joining Mount Sinai in 2017, Dr. Peña acted as the Director of Center for Weight Loss at North Shore LIJ. Currently, she serves as both an Assistant Professor at The Icahn School of Medicine, as well as the Director of Endocrine Services at Mount Sinai Doctors Forest Hills. Dr. Peña has given presentations at medical grand rounds, published in medical journals, including a chapter in Current Diabetes Reviews, and has presented her work at national conferences.

In her professional community, Dr. Peña is a member of several medical organizations, including the Endocrine Society, the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, the American Diabetes Association, and the Obesity Society. She also serves on the exam writing committee of the American Board of Obesity Medicine.

Outside of her clinical and administrative roles, Dr. Peña is actively involved in coordinating medical missions in Latin America, volunteering in mentoring programs for minority students interested in healthcare, and health education in the community.
