About Me
Mariana Grossi Bessa Szuchmacher, MD is a dual board-certified pediatric neurologist and clinical neurophysiologist specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of complex and drug-resistant pediatric epilepsy. She is an Associate Professor of Neurology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and cares for children at Mount Sinai Kravis Children's Hospital and NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst. Her clinical expertise includes pediatric epilepsy, drug resistance epilepsy associated with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC), neurocutaneous disorders, continuous EEG monitoring, and other rare pediatric neurological disorders.
Dr. Szuchmacher is recognized for developing innovative multidisciplinary programs that improve access to specialized care for children with complex neurological diseases. Her academic interests focus on pediatric epilepsy, neurocutaneous disorders, and multidisciplinary models of care that improve outcomes for children with rare neurological conditions. A Brazilian physician who trained in both Brazil and the United States, Dr. Szuchmacher brings a bilingual, bicultural perspective to her practice. She is committed to building lasting partnerships with patients and families, ensuring they feel informed, supported, and empowered throughout every stage of their child's care.
Dr. Szuchmacher received her medical degree in Brazil before completing residency training in Pediatrics at Brookdale Hospital Medical Center, Child Neurology at LIJ /Cohen Children’s Hospital and fellowship training in Clinical Neurophysiology with a focus on Pediatric Epilepsy at Montefiore/Einstein School of Medicine in the United States. Prior to joining Mount Sinai, she served as Associate Professor of Pediatric Neurology at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), where she expanded pediatric epilepsy services and established a Pediatric Multidisciplinary Neurocutaneous Disorders Clinic, improving access to specialized care for children across the region.
An active clinician and passion educator, Dr. Szuchmacher has mentor medical students, residents, and fellows. She is an active member of leading professional organizations dedicated to advancing pediatric neurology and epilepsy care.
