Rehabilitation and Physical Medicine, Pain Management
About Me
Dr. Martin Pico is a board-certified interventional physiatrist with advanced fellowship training in pain management. He practices at Mount Sinai West and serves as an Assistant Professor with joint appointments in the Departments of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation and Human Performance at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. With a passion for improving patient’s quality of life, he specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of pain conditions affecting the spine and peripheral joints (knees, shoulders, and hip). Dr. Pico employs a multidisciplinary approach, integrating minimally invasive injections, physical therapy, acupuncture, and comprehensive pain management strategies tailored to each individual’s needs.
Dr. Pico earned his undergraduate degree in Biology from the University of Pennsylvania, graduating Magna Cum Laude. He went on to receive his medical degree from Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, followed by a medicine internship at Mount Sinai Beth Israel. He completed his residency in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at New York University, where he served as chief resident, coordinated anatomy labs and ultrasound workshops, and received the Howard A. Rusk Resident of the Year Award in 2022. Simultaneously he underwent training in acupuncture from Suny Downstate and is a licensed acupuncturist. He then completed an ACGME-accredited interventional pain fellowship at Emory University in Atlanta.
Committed to patient education and empowerment, Dr. Pico believes in fostering a collaborative relationship with his patients to ensure they understand their conditions and treatment options. He specializes in minimally invasive pain management procedures, with expertise in performing x-ray guided epidural injections of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine, sacroiliac joint injections, facet joint injections, and radiofrequency neurotomy. He also offers advanced treatments like basivertebral nerve ablation, kyphoplasty, platelet-rich plasma injections, and spinal cord and peripheral nerve stimulation. His approach integrates minimally invasive procedures with physical rehabilitation to help patients achieve optimal function and regain control over their lives. As part of a multi-disciplinary team, Dr. Pico works closely with spine surgeons who can address any surgical needs as they arise.
Dr. Pico is an active member of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabailitation (AAPMR), the Interventional Pain and Spine Interventional Society (IPSIS), and the North American Neuromodulation Society (NANS).
