About Me

Matthew I. Tomey, M.D. is a clinical, interventional and critical care cardiologist and Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

With offices and admitting privileges at both the Mount Sinai Hospital and Mount Sinai Morningside, Dr. Tomey is available to provide cardiovascular care and consultation on both the East Side and West Side of Manhattan.

Board certified in internal medicine, critical care medicine, cardiovascular disease, echocardiography and interventional cardiology, experienced in cardiac and cardiothoracic critical care, and published in major cardiovascular journals and texts, Dr. Tomey is a specialist in diagnosis and management of acute cardiovascular disease. An experienced ICU director, Dr. Tomey currently serves as Director of Critical Care Cardiology and Director of the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit at Mount Sinai Morningside, where is also the center's principal investigator for the Critical Care Cardiology Trials Network. A devoted educator, Dr. Tomey serves as course director for cardiovascular pathophysiology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai alongside extensive involvement in undergraduate and graduate medical education and programming for national scientific conferences. His principal clinical and research interests include acute myocardial infarction (heart attack), acute heart failure and shock.

Dr. Tomey is a graduate of Harvard College and the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha and awarded the Robert F. Loeb Award for excellence in clinical medicine and the Allen O. Whipple Prize for outstanding performance in surgery. Dr. Tomey served as a resident in internal medicine at the Brigham and Women's Hospital, where he received the Golden Stethoscope Award and recognition as one of the best residents and fellows at Harvard Medical School. He then completed three fellowships in cardiology, interventional cardiology and critical care medicine, all at Mount Sinai, serving as chief cardiology fellow under the direction of Dr. Valentin Fuster and Dr. Martin Goldman and chief interventional fellow under the direction of Dr. Samin Sharma and Dr. Annapoorna Kini. He is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (ACC), the American Heart Association (AHA) and the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI), Chair of the ACC's Credentialing and Member Services Committee and Chair of the AHA's Cardiovascular Interventions Committee.
