Mauro Martinez, PhD
About Me
Mauro Martinez, PhD, an environmental epidemiologist and analytical chemist, is the lab head for the Chemical Mapping Group of the Department of Environmental Medicine and Climate Science at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
Dr. Martinez graduated with a BSc in Chemistry from the Central University of Venezuela (Venezuela) where he first began his career working with laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). Through a Graduate Cooperation Program between France and Venezuela, he earned a PhD in Science specialized in chemistry from Central University of Venezuela in 2013, and a PhD in Analytical Chemistry, Environment and Materials from University of Pau (France) in 2014.
Since his PhD, Dr. Martinez has developed solutions for LA-ICP-MS and LIBS analysis, starting with xerogels materials as a way to quantify metals in crude oils.
His current research at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai is focused on optimizing and applying new standard material for clinical samples such as tooth, hair and soft tissue to obtain elemental imaging in concentrations. This work has the potential to further our understanding about elemental interactions with our body and the correlation with the environment. Dr. Martinez is working on developing a novel methodology to quantify tooth fluoride and evaluate the effects of fluoride exposure and its association with health outcomes, including on neurodevelopment and kidney function.
