About Me
Dr. Bansal has been on faculty at Mount Sinai since 2001. In addition to maintaining an NIH funded research program focused on molecular mechanism of liver fibrosis with seminal contributions to our understanding of liver fibrosis in people living with HIV, Dr. Bansal held many different leadership roles at Mount Sinai, including Transplant Hepatology Fellowship Director, Director of Translational Research, Medical Director of Hospital-Based Clinics, Chief Medical Officer of Mount Sinai Care, LLC, Deputy Chief Medical Officer for Mount Sinai Health Partners, and Vice President of Population Health for Quality and Efficiency. In these latter roles, she helped generate increased quality dollars in value-based contracts, created Mount Sinai’s first ambulatory pharmacy program, addressed broad population health needs, and gained knowledge about payer relations in an ever-changing health care landscape.
From a Clinical Perspective, she is currently focused on the treatment and management for those with Metabolic Dysfunction Associated Steatohepatitis (MASH), formerly known as Non-alcoholic steatohepatits (NASH). She has served as the principal investigator for numerous clinical trials for MASH/NASH and has been greatly involved with bringing new therapeutics to patients.
At the international/national levels, she held the position of Secretary for the American Association for the Study of Liver and currently serves as the Director of thenewly formed MASLD/MASH (NAFLD/NASH) Center of Excellence at Mount Sinai.
Most recently, in January 2024, Dr. Bansal was named System Chief, Division of Liver Diseases for the Mount Sinai Health System.

Summary of Research Studies: Brief Biosketch and Research Interests Dr. Bansal joined the faculty at Mount Sinai in 2001 after completing Gastroenterology Fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania. In 2002 she became the Hepatology Fellowship Director, leading one of the largest hepatology fellowships in the United States. While remaining clinically active, she has also developed an NIH-funded basic research program focusing on understanding underlying molecular mechanisms of liver fibrosis/cirrhosis in an effort to develop novel anti-fibrotic therapies. Her research interests focus on the role of Matrix Metalloproteinase-2 in liver fibrosis and regeneration and Role of the chemokine receptors, CXCR4 and CCR5, on stellate cell biology and fibrogenesis. The latter has great implications in understanding mechanism of HCV- and HIV/HCV-induced liver disease.

Physicians who provide services at hospitals and facilities in the Mount Sinai Health System might not participate in the same health plans as those Mount Sinai hospitals and facilities (even if the physicians are employed or contracted by those hospitals or facilities).
Information regarding insurance participation and billing by this physician may be found on this page, and can also be obtained by contacting this provider directly. Because physicians insurance participation can change, the insurance information on this page may not always be up-to-date. Please contact this physician directly to obtain the most up-to-date insurance information.
Insurance and health plan networks that the various Mount Sinai Health System hospitals and facilities participate in can be found on the Mount Sinai Health System website.
The Patient Experience Star Rating reflects our patients’ perception of how well their Mount Sinai provider communicated with them during an office visit. The Star Rating is based on patient responses to three questions on a patient experience survey, a standardized questionnaire sent to verified patients and distributed by a third party vendor, Press Ganey. Responses are measured on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the best score.
