About Me
Dr. Melissa Leber, MD, FACEP, rMSK
Director of Player Medical Services, US Open Tennis Championships
Associate Professor of Orthopedics and Emergency Medicine, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai
Dr. Melissa Leber is a nationally recognized sports medicine physician and one of the few dual board-certified experts in both Emergency Medicine and Sports Medicine. As the Director of Player Medical Services for the US Open, she leads the medical care for the world’s top tennis players. Guided by Billie Jean King’s words, “Pressure is a privilege,” she strives to deliver excellence and empathy under pressure, whether courtside or in the office.
At the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, Dr. Leber serves as an Associate Professor of Orthopedics and Emergency Medicine, where she teaches and mentors the next generation of physicians. Giving lectures both locally and nationally, she is able to connect with colleagues to share information and teach others. Whether you’re a professional competitor or someone who simply enjoys staying active, her goal is to keep you moving safely and confidently.
Though, not a surgeon, Dr. Leber collaborates closely with her orthopedic surgical colleagues and helps patients find the right fit when surgery is needed. Her approach blends cutting-edge innovation with traditional therapies, always guided by patient-centered decision-making. She integrates ultrasound-guided diagnostics, concussion management, and regenerative medicine (including platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and stem cell therapy) to create individualized, evidence-based treatment plans.
A lifelong athlete herself, Dr. Leber is an alumna of the Horace Mann School, where she played varsity tennis, basketball, and softball. She has proudly served as Team Physician for Horace Mann since 2013, giving back to the school that helped shape her. She continued her athletic journey at Brandeis University, where she played collegiate softball as a catcher, an experience that inspired her path toward sports medicine.
Dr. Leber’s professional experience includes working with the New York Jets, the Pittsburgh Pirates (MLB), USA Rugby, and at the New York City Marathon and Triathlon. She has been honored numerous times as a Castle Connolly Top Doctor and as an Exceptional Woman in Medicine, and has appeared on NBC Nightly News, the Weather Channel, and is frequently quoted in national publications for her expertise on concussions and advanced diagnostics.
When she’s not caring for patients or teaching, Dr. Leber loves staying active, playing tennis, and working out regularly. She brings the same passion for movement to her own life that she inspires in her patients. Whether on the sidelines of the US Open or in her exam room, Dr. Leber brings energy, warmth, and excellence to everything she does, helping her patients perform at their best and recover stronger than ever.
