About Me

Dr Michael Stuart Garfinkle is a licensed clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst, as well as an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He also holds faculty positions at Adelphi University, Columbia University, the Institute for Psychoanalytic Training and Research (IPTAR), and the New School. Dr Garfinkle received a BA (Honours) in the History and Theory of Psychology from York University (Toronto, Canada) and an MA and PhD in Clinical Psychology from the Derner Institute of Psychology at Adelphi University (Garden City, NY). Dr Garfinkle received postdoctoral training in adult psychoanalysis from IPTAR (New York, NY).

Dr Garfinkle has been in private practive for over a decade and currently practices from a NoHo office. His practice includes psychotherapy, psychoanalysis, and neuropsychological and forensic assessments of children, adolescents, adults, and older adults. In addition to his work with patients, Dr Garfinkle is a clinical supervisor, research advisor, and teacher to graduate psychology students and psychiatry residents. He is the author of papers in interventional cardiology, clinical psychology, psychoanalysis, as well as in the psychological impact of Somali piracy on seafarers. In 2014 and 2018, Dr Garfinkle organized international psychoanalytical conferences in Reykjavìk, Iceland, and had a third conference planned in Ljubljana, Slovenia, that was postponed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
