About Me
Nikhil A. Kumta, MD, MS is the Director of Interventional Endoscopy for the Mount Sinai Health System, Director of Surgical and Bariatric Endoscopy, and an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Henry D. Janowitz Division of Gastroenterology. Dr. Kumta completed an accelerated BS/MD program, receiving his undergraduate degree from Pennsylvania State University and his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College. He received a Masters Degree in Patient-Oriented Research from Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health. He completed residency training in Internal Medicine at New York Presbyterian Hospital – Weill Cornell Medical Center and remained at Cornell for fellowship training in Gastroenterology and Hepatology, during which time he served as Chief Gastroenterology Fellow. He then completed an additional year of subspecialty fellowship training in advanced endoscopy, surgical endoscopy, and bariatric endoscopy at Cornell before joining Mount Sinai.
Dr. Kumta specializes in pancreatic disease, biliary tract disease, pre-cancerous and cancerous lesions of the gastrointestinal tract, surgical endoscopy, and endoscopic management of reflux and obesity. He performs advanced diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures, including endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM), endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD), endoluminal stent placement, endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), complex polypectomy, transoral incisionless fundoplication (TIF), endoscopic therapy for complications of pancreatitis, and endoscopic treatment of obesity including intragastric balloon placement and endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG). He has clinical and research interests in minimally invasive endoscopic procedures and device innovation.
