Niraj Kothari, MD

Niraj Kothari, MD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Nephrology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Nephrology, and is a member of the American Society of Nephrology and the National Kidney Foundation.   

Dr. Kothari is a graduate of the University of Missouri—Kansas City School of Medicine and completed residency training in Internal Medicine at Saint Louis University. Following this, he completed his clinical fellowship in Nephrology at Duke. He cares for patients with a wide spectrum of kidney diseases, and his clinical interests include acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, and dialysis care. He is interested in the mitigation of healthcare disparities and has been a lecturer and invited panelist on this topic.

Prior to joining Mount Sinai, he was an Assistant Professor at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine, where he served as Ambulatory Medical Director for the Nephrology Division and Co-Director of the Renal Course for second year medical students, winning the Best Teacher award for his dedication to education. He remains involved in the education of medical students, residents, and fellows rotating on the Nephrology services at The Mount Sinai Hospital, and serves as Medical Director of the inpatient dialysis unit at Mount Sinai Queens and the Mount Sinai Kidney Center – East River Plaza, one of the largest outpatient dialysis units in Manhattan.   

Dr. Kothari sees patients hospitalized at The Mount Sinai Hospital. His clinic is located at Mount Sinai Faculty Practice Associates, and he cares for dialysis patients at the Mount Sinai Kidney Center — East River Plaza. In his free time, he enjoys cooking, playing tennis, and watching Chiefs football.
