About Me
Dr. James Oh Park is a highly distinguished hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) surgical oncologist with extensive experience in surgery for diseases of the liver, gallbladder, bile duct, pancreas, and upper gastrointestinal tract. He is Professor of Surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine and System Chief of Surgical Oncology for the Mount Sinai Health System. He leads a team of experienced surgical oncologists and endocrine surgeons across 10 hospitals, overseeing their clinical and academic research endeavors. Additionally, he will co-lead the Center of Excellence for Pancreatic Cancer and support the multidisciplinary tumor boards involving the above disease entities.
He is a recognized leader in the field, actively involved in translational research, education, and clinical service. His clinical focus is on minimally invasive surgery for complex hepatobiliary and pancreatic malignancies, with extensive experience in robotic surgery, performing the first robotic liver resection in the Pacific Northwest in 2011 and the first robotic Whipple procedure in Washington state in 2012. He established the University of Washington Robotic HPB Surgery Program, making UW the only robust robotic program performing these procedures in Washington State, and was chair of the robotic surgery program at UW Medicine | Fred Hutch Cancer Center and lead the program to designation as Center of Excellence in Robotic Surgery.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Park has an active translational research effort on cutting-edge applications of nanotechnology for antibody-targeted imaging and alpha-particle radioimmunotherapy of liver and pancreatic cancer. He holds multiple patents and grants related to his research endeavors.
Dr. Park received his Bachelor of Science degree from Brown University and his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. He completed his post-medical school training with internship, research fellowship, and residency at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine where he was chief administrative resident. He further specialized in Surgical Oncology with a fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
Dr. Park has received numerous awards and recognitions, including being named a Castle Connolly “Top Doctor”, a Seattle Magazine “Top Doctor” in Surgical Oncology, and a Seattle Met Magazine “Top Doctor” in Cancer Surgery. He is a dedicated educator who has mentored and trained numerous medical students, surgical residents and PhD candidates.
