Research

Dr. Peak Woo, whose clinical interests are laryngology and voice disorders, is leading a multidisciplinary team dedicated to the comprehensive treatment of the voice and larynx as Director of Clinical Services of The Eugen Grabscheid, M.D., Voice Center.

Using a multidisciplinary approach that brings together otolaryngologists, speech/language pathologists, voice scientists, neurologists, gastroenterologists, and other experts, the Grabscheid Voice Center provides comprehensive treatment of the voice and larynx through medicine, surgery, and rehabilitative services. State-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic equipment allows the most advanced management of these patients. Under the clinical directorship of Dr. Woo, the voice program has become one of the truly outstanding centers in the nation. The Grabscheid Voice Center is a resource for patients who suffer from the entire spectrum of voice disorders. Under the direction of Dr. Woo, the Center also will be establishing a unique Swallowing Disorders program.

The Grabscheid Voice Center provides comprehensive treatment of the following diseases and disorders:

Problems of the professional singer and voice user
Neurological disease (stroke, Parkinson's disease)
Polyps and other benign vocal fold lesions
Acute and chronic laryngitis
Muscular tension dysphonia
Functional voice disorders
Nodules
Laryngeal cancer
Swallowing disorders
Vocal cord paralysis

The following rehabilitative services, surgeries, and procedures are done at the Center:

Examining the vibration of vocal cords with a special scope called an endostroboscopy Objective testing of the voice and breathing through Phonatory function measures

-acoustic parameters
-respiratory kinematics
-electroglottography

Speech and singing therapy to modify or change the way people use the voice to promote better vocal health

Pre- and post-treatment documentation and consultations

Testing of electric signals of muscle function of the larynx through a process called Laryngeal electromyography

Surgery designed to change the voice or Phonosurgery

Injection of botulism toxin into the muscle of the vocal cord to treat spasmodic dysphonia

Diagnosis and management of laryngeal acid reflux laryngitis

Voice rehabilitation by tracheal-esophageal puncture

Laryngeal reconstruction
