About Me
Peter Bernstein, MD, MPH, is a board certified obstetrician-gynecologist at The Mount Sinai Hospital, where he also serves as System Vice Chair of Obstetrics for Quality and Safety and System Director for the Division of Obstetrics in the Raquel and Jaime Gilinski Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Science at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Dr. Bernstein has special interest in improving the quality and safety of obstetric care and fostering systems of care that enhance the experience of pregnancy and childbirth for women and their families.
Dr. Bernstein joined Mount Sinai after serving as Director of the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Women’s Health at Montefiore Medical Center and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. During his time at Montefiore, Dr. Bernstein served as Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship Director and was a founding member of the Montefiore Medical Center Obstetrics Patient Safety Committee.
Dr. Bernstein earned his medical degree from Yale University School of Medicine, where he also completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology. During his residency, he served as Chief Administrative Resident and was awarded the Waterbury Prize for outstanding senior resident and the Peter A. Granum Award for Chief Resident for exemplifying a humanistic approach to medicine and dedication to teaching. Dr. Bernstein went on to complete a fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and earned a Master of Public Health degree from Columbia University, School of Public Health.
Dr. Bernstein is a member of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, where he previously served as the Chair of the Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Committee and the Chair of the Council on Patient Safety in Women’s Healthcare. Dr. Bernstein currently serves as Co-Chair of District II ACOG’s Safe Motherhood Initiative and is a member of the New York State Department of Health’s Maternal Mortality Review Board.
