Richard Smith, MD
Cardiovascular Disease (Heart Disease), Nuclear Cardiology
About Me
Dr. Richard Smith has practiced cardiology for over 30 years. After completing his undergraduate studies at Stony Brook University, Dr. Smith graduated with his doctorate degree from Sackler School of Medicine in Tel Aviv, Israel. He then went on to Long Island Jewish Medical Center for his Internal Medicine residency, followed by Winthrop University Hospital for his Cardiology fellowship, where he was Chief Fellow during his final year. With his board certifications in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease, and Nuclear Cardiology, Dr. Smith's clinical interests include echocardiography, nuclear cardiology, and non-invasive cardiology.
Prior to joining Mount Sinai, Dr. Smith spent 8 years on staff at Winthrop University Hospital where he directed the Echocardiography Program and Cardiology Clinics. During this time, he was also elected Outstanding Attending Physician of the Year in Cardiology and Internal Medicine. Currently, Dr. Smith is a member of multiple professional organizations and holds fellowship status in the American College of Cardiology and the American Society of Echocardiography.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Smith has inspired seasoned cardiologists and those newly entering the field since 1997 as an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Stony Brook University. He has also participated in numerous clinical trials and contributed to several prominent publications.
When working with his patients, Dr. Smith feels that partnering his love of arts with love of life forms deeper connections with each patient. He explains, "Medicine is both an art and a science, and a good clinician should incorporate an understanding of this philosophy into the care of his or her patients." Outside of his time in the office, Dr. Smith enjoys publically performing his published works of poetry and short stories.

Patient Experience Star Ratings and Comments
The Patient Experience Star Rating reflects our patients’ perception of how well their Mount Sinai provider communicated with them during an office visit. The Star Rating is based on patient responses to three questions on a patient experience survey, a standardized questionnaire sent to verified patients and distributed by a third party vendor, Press Ganey. Responses are measured on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the best score.
