Rui Feng, MD
Neurosurgery
About Me
Rui (Rey) Feng, MD, MSc, is an Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and an attending neurosurgeon at Mount Sinai South Nassau in Oceanside, New York as well Elmhurst Hospital Center. Dr. Feng is a fellowship-trained skull base neurosurgeon who treats a broad range of cranial and spinal conditions, with a clinical focus on brain tumors, pituitary and skull base lesions, and complex cranial surgery. Her academic work centers on applying artificial intelligence and computer vision to neurosurgical care, particularly the continuous monitoring of neurological status in critically ill patients.
Dr. Feng's research sits at the intersection of neurosurgery and data science. She led the development of an AI system that tracks patient movement from bedside video to detect changes in neurological status in the Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit, work supported by an NIH TL1 Career Development Award and published in Neurosurgery. Her broader research interests include machine learning prediction of surgical outcomes, quantitative imaging analysis of meningiomas and pituitary tumors, preoperative embolization of skull base lesions, and ultra-high-field 7T MRI for surgical planning in vestibular schwannoma. She is deeply committed to education and mentorship: she has guided teams of medical students through research projects that resulted in peer reviewed publications, and she has served as faculty for the Congress of Neurological Surgeons Artificial Intelligence Symposium and as course director of the 2026 CNS Spring Virtual Course and the Annual Meeting AI and Data Science Symposium.
Dr. Feng earned her Honours Bachelor of Science with High Distinction from the University of Toronto and a Master of Science in Clinical Neuroscience with Distinction from University College London's Queen Square Institute of Neurology. She received her medical degree from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, where she was awarded the Scholars as Leaders Merit Scholarship. She completed her neurological surgery residency at the Mount Sinai Health System in New York, followed by a fellowship in skull base neurosurgery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia under Dr. James Evans.
Dr. Feng has authored more than 40 peer-reviewed publications and a textbook chapter in Holland-Frei Cancer Medicine, with work appearing in Neurosurgery, eClinicalMedicine, Scientific Reports, Spine, World Neurosurgery. Her honors include the NIH Postdoctoral TL1 Clinical and Translational Research Career Development Award, the Dr. Kalmon Post Resident Research Award for best resident publication, a North American Skull Base Society Research Grant, and a Friedman Brain Institute Advanced Neuroimaging Research Program Pilot Grant. She has presented her work at the annual meetings of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons and the North American Skull Base Society, and is a member of theCNS Data Science Committee.

Industry Relationships
Physicians and scientists on the faculty of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai often interact with pharmaceutical, device, biotechnology companies, and other outside entities to improve patient care, develop new therapies and achieve scientific breakthroughs. In order to promote an ethical and transparent environment for conducting research, providing clinical care and teaching, Mount Sinai requires that salaried faculty inform the School of their outside financial relationships.
Dr. Feng has not yet completed reporting of industry relationships or has no industry relationships to report.
Mount Sinai’s faculty policies relating to faculty collaboration with industry are posted on our website. Patients may wish to ask their physician about the activities they perform for companies.
