About Me
Dr. Sean Schowalter is a distinguished sports physician specializing in the nonoperative management of musculoskeletal conditions. With expertise in treating a broad spectrum of issues - ranging from ligament and tendon injuries to joint pain, arthritis, back pain, and localized nerve injuries - Dr. Schowalter caters to athletes, active individuals, and those seeking to enhance their physical activity. He is committed to developing personalized treatment plans for each patient, combining therapies, medications, and procedural interventions to alleviate pain, restore function, and enhance mobility.
Dr. Schowalter earned his medical degree with honors from Boston University and completed his residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) at Harvard/Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital. During his residency, he was honored with the Resident Teacher of the Year Award and received a distinction in musculoskeletal ultrasound. He further honed his expertise with fellowship training in Sports Medicine and Interventional Spine at Mount Sinai Hospital.
Currently, Dr. Schowalter serves as an Assistant Professor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, where he acts as ultrasound director for the medical school, PM&R residency and Sports fellowships. In addition, his role extends as one of the official team doctors for USA Fencing and International Sumo. His special interests include diagnostic ultrasound, ultrasound-guided procedures, and regenerative medicine techniques such as platelet-rich plasma, shockwave therapy, Tenex, and prolotherapy.
An accomplished author, Dr. Schowalter has contributed numerous articles and book chapters to journals within Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine.
