Shannon O'neill, PhD
Psychology, Psychiatry
About Me
Dr. Shannon O’Neill joined the Center for Advanced Circuit Therapeutics (C-ACT) and the Department of Psychiatry in 2019. Within her C-ACT position, Dr. O’Neill provides pre-/post-surgical psychological assessments and ongoing psychotherapy to patients implanted with deep brain stimulation (DBS). Primary diagnoses treated within this role include neurological movement disorders (Parkinson’s disease, dystonia, essential tremor), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), Tourette syndrome (TS), and major depressive disorder (MDD). Additional patient-populations served are those receiving other neuromodulation interventions (e.g., spinal cord stimulation, vagus nerve stimulation, and transcranial magnetic stimulation) to help manage symptoms of chronic pain, epileptic seizures, OCD, and MDD. A unique feature of Dr. O’Neill’s work entails a 5-day accelerated treatment program - pairing TMS with exposure and response prevention (ERP) to aid those with severe OCD symptomatology.
Dr. O’Neill received her doctoral degree from Fordham University at Lincoln Center and is now credentialed as a National Register Health Service Psychologist. She completed an American Psychological Association accredited internship and fellowship within the VA Healthcare System. Through comprehensive training, she specialized in health psychology and has implemented therapeutic services across a diverse array of psychological/medical pathology. Dr. O’Neill is highly trained in completing pre-surgical psychological evaluations, medical psychology consultations, and delivering individual/group therapy to patients diagnosed with chronic medical conditions. Training within the VA Healthcare System led to Dr. O’Neill’s national certification as a cognitive processing therapy (CPT) provider, which is a trauma-processing therapy offered to those suffering with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). She also has extensive, specialty training in cognitive-behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) to aid with sleep-related concerns.
Dr. O’Neill has expertise in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) as well as acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), implementing these evidence-based services across a range of psychopathology (OCD, MDD, generalized anxiety, insomnia, chronic pain, PTSD, etc.). Proficiency was further fostered with training at the iconic Beck Institute for CBT. Through previous experience within Mount Sinai’s Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders Program, Dr. O’Neill has in-depth knowledge of exposure and response prevention (ERP) as well as habit reversal training (HRT). Complimentary to these behavioral treatments, she is also a national certified provider of comprehensive behavioral intervention for tics (CBIT) therapy recognized by the Tourette Association of America.
Dr. O’Neill has appeared on NY1, WCBS-TV, WABC, PBS, and ScienceNews as well as actively contributes to several printed media outlets, including New York Times, New York Magazine, Vogue, SELF, Health, INSIDER, and Allure.
