Stephen Miranda, MD
Neurosurgery, Spine Surgery
About Me
Stephen Miranda, MD, MS, is an Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery and Director of Peripheral Nerve for Neurosurgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He completed subspecialty fellowship training in peripheral nerve surgery and specializes in the surgical treatment of various nerve disorders, including nerve entrapment, pain, tumors, and trauma such as brachial plexus and extremity injuries. Dr. Miranda collaborates with experts across Mount Sinai to create personalized treatment plans aimed at improving each patient’s quality of life and optimizing nerve function recovery. His approach incorporates advanced surgical techniques and technologies like nerve stimulation, repair, transfer, and complex reconstruction.
Beyond peripheral nerve surgery, Dr. Miranda also manages back pain and other spinal conditions using both open and minimally invasive procedures. His academic interests include developing value-based care models for spine surgery to ensure patients receive the most appropriate treatment at the right time. In 2021, Dr. Miranda was selected for the National Clinician Scholars Program, a prestigious fellowship in health services research established by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. He holds a Master of Science in Health Policy Research from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, and his research has focused on access, cost, and quality of spine surgery, with an emphasis on cost-effectiveness and patient-centered outcomes like return-to-work. His current work explores how wearable technologies and artificial intelligence can accelerate recovery after spine surgery.
Originally from Long Island, Dr. Miranda earned his B.A. with Honors from Stanford University and his M.D. from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, where he received the Jules Cohen Award for Advancing Medical Education. He completed his neurosurgical residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, including a fellowship in peripheral nerve surgery under Dr. Eric Zager’s mentorship.
Dr. Miranda resides in New York City with his wife and enjoys running, hiking, and traveling. He sees patients at The Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan and Mount Sinai Queens in Astoria.

Patient Experience Star Ratings and Comments
The Patient Experience Star Rating reflects our patients’ perception of how well their Mount Sinai provider communicated with them during an office visit. The Star Rating is based on patient responses to three questions on a patient experience survey, a standardized questionnaire sent to verified patients and distributed by a third party vendor, Press Ganey. Responses are measured on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the best score.
Industry Relationships
Physicians and scientists on the faculty of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai often interact with pharmaceutical, device, biotechnology companies, and other outside entities to improve patient care, develop new therapies and achieve scientific breakthroughs. In order to promote an ethical and transparent environment for conducting research, providing clinical care and teaching, Mount Sinai requires that salaried faculty inform the School of their outside financial relationships.
Dr. Miranda has not yet completed reporting of Industry relationships.
Mount Sinai’s faculty policies relating to faculty collaboration with industry are posted on our website. Patients may wish to ask their physician about the activities they perform for companies.
