About Me
I am a neurologist and neuromuscular specialist with expertise in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) clinical care and trials. I am the co-founder and Director of the Beth Israel Medical Center/ALS Association NY Chapter ALS Center that was created in 1997. Since 2003, the center has gained national recognition for participation in ALS clinical trials. I have access to a large population of patients with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. We became part of the Mount Sinai Health System in 2013. We follow 120 patients at any given time. I am an active member of NEALS, the Northeastern ALS Consortium. I have a strong interest in conducting clinical trials in ALS and other neuromuscular diseases.
At Mount Sinai Beth Israel, we conducted an investigator initiated phase1/2 trial of indinavir in ALS, in collaboration with Columbia University Medical Center. I was the principal investigator.
Our center has also conducted a controlled study of reverse transcriptase detection in the serum and CSF of HIV negative, sporadic ALS patients. We have been involved in multiple clinical trials sponsored by industry and NIH. Our primary research interest is in drug development in ALS.
We are also participating in a new study to validate a new functional scale for PLS (primary lateral sclerosis) with Dr Mitsumoto at Columbia University. PLS is a neglected disease in clinical trials. I am very interested in developing new clinical trials in PLS and this project provides a great opportunity.
I offer telemedicine appointments when appropriate. Please call my office to schedule a video visit.
Dr. Scelsa is registered to provide telehealth services in New Jersey.
The state of Florida requires out-of-state professionals who are registered to provide telehealth services to display a hyperlink to the Florida Department of Health telehealth web page. This allows Florida patients who are receiving medical care by telehealth to confirm the provider’s licensure and Florida registration.

Physicians who provide services at hospitals and facilities in the Mount Sinai Health System might not participate in the same health plans as those Mount Sinai hospitals and facilities (even if the physicians are employed or contracted by those hospitals or facilities).
Information regarding insurance participation and billing by this physician may be found on this page, and can also be obtained by contacting this provider directly. Because physicians insurance participation can change, the insurance information on this page may not always be up-to-date. Please contact this physician directly to obtain the most up-to-date insurance information.

Patient Experience Star Ratings and Comments
The Patient Experience Star Rating reflects our patients’ perception of how well their Mount Sinai provider communicated with them during an office visit. The Star Rating is based on patient responses to three questions on a patient experience survey, a standardized questionnaire sent to verified patients and distributed by a third party vendor, Press Ganey. Responses are measured on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the best score.

Physicians and scientists on the faculty of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai often interact with pharmaceutical, device, biotechnology companies, and other outside entities to improve patient care, develop new therapies and achieve scientific breakthroughs. In order to promote an ethical and transparent environment for conducting research, providing clinical care and teaching, Mount Sinai requires that salaried faculty inform the School of their outside financial relationships.
Below are financial relationships with industry reported by Dr. Scelsa during 2024 and/or 2025. Please note that this information may differ from information posted on corporate sites due to timing or classification differences.
