About Me
Dr. Markowitz founded the Mount Sinai/Queens College International Training Program in Environmental and Occupational Health in 1995 and has been its Co-Director since. He is Professor and Director of the Center for the Biology of Natural Systems at Queens College, City University of New York. Between 1986 and 1998, Dr. Markowitz was a fulltime faculty member of the Department of Community and Preventive Medicine at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and now serves as an Adjunct Professor in that department. Dr. Markowitz is also a co-investigator in a Mount Sinai sponsored study of community interventions to reduce pesticide exposures in homes in East Harlem.
Dr. Markowitz's research experience centers on the epidemiological and surveillance aspects of environmental and occupational medicine. He published a series of studies on the health burden and costs of occupational disease in New York, New Jersey and the United States. The latter study was recently published as a book, Costs of Occupational Disease and Injury in the United States (University of Michigan Press, 2000). He has also published in the areas of occupational cancer and occupational lung disease. Dr. Markowitz is the author of chapters in two of the major texts in occupational and environmental medicine, Rosenstock and Cullen's Clinical and Environmental Medicine and Rom's Environmental and Occupational Medicine.
