Sumayya Ahmad, MD
Ophthalmology (Eye), Cornea, External Disease and Refractive Surgery
About Me
Dr. Sumayya Ahmad joined Mount Sinai as an Ophthalmologist in 2016. After graduating with her medical degree from Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Ahmad completed her internship in Internal Medicine at Mount Sinai West and Morningside. She then moved to the Wilmer Eye Institute of Johns Hopkins for her residency in Ophthalmology before completing her fellowship in Cornea and External Disease at The Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. With her certification by the American Board of Ophthalmology, Dr. Ahmad's clinical interests include keratoconus and cataract surgery. Additionally, Dr. Ahmad is multilingual and can communicate with her patients in English, Punjabi, Urdu, and Spanish.
In conjunction with her clinical role, Dr. Ahmad serves as Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at The Icahn School of Medicine, where she teachers residents how to perfom cataract surgery and how to treat corneal diseases. She is also a member of The Cornea Society and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Throughout her training, Dr. Ahmad was the recipient of several competitive awards which funded some of her work abroad. Having provided medical care in Thailand, Argentina, and India, Dr. Ahmad respects and addresses the cultural differences in views toward illness and treatment throughout her patient population.
Dr. Ahmad's current clinical research interests include evaluating trends in myopia, astigmatism, and ocular surface disease. She has authored several peer-reviewed scientific articles and has given a number of presentations on ocular conditions including keratitis, dry eye, and the outcomes of the Boston Type 1 Keratoprostheses.
When discussing her time in practice, Dr. Ahmad says she feels privileged to be able to use her skills to restore vision, making a powerful and immediate impact on the quality of a patient's life.

Patient Experience Star Ratings and Comments
The Patient Experience Star Rating reflects our patients’ perception of how well their Mount Sinai provider communicated with them during an office visit. The Star Rating is based on patient responses to three questions on a patient experience survey, a standardized questionnaire sent to verified patients and distributed by a third party vendor, Press Ganey. Responses are measured on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the best score.
