Yuri Choi, MD
Internal Medicine
About Me
Yuri Choi, MD, is a Primary Care Physician and an Associate Professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine at Mount Sinai Morningside and Mount Sinai West. Dr. Choi received her medical degree from St. George's University School of Medicine and completed her Internal Medicine residency at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown, New York.
Growing up in South Korea, Dr. Choi saw diseases transform without proper vaccinations or preventive care, especially through her father who became wheelchair-bound due to lack of polio vaccinations in 1950’s. Throughout her educational journey in South Korea and the United States, she witnessed serious health illiteracy, disparities, shortage of physicians and lack of access to care, and this inspired her to pursue her Internal Medicine residency in rural area in New York.
Throughout her training, Dr. Choi learned that preventive interventions to reduce the risk of diseases were an easy concept to understand but very difficult to implement in numerous patients’ lives. Pillars of health maintenance, such as smoking cessations, a prudent diet, weight management, medication compliance and regular check-ups seemed deceivingly straightforward actions, which were often disregarded/misunderstood by the average person (or not tackled efficiently by their practitioners at times). For this reason, Dr. Choi decided to pursue her career in Primary Care to promote a strong focus on lifestyle optimization, assess social determinants of health, and consolidate existing evidence-based recommendations to create unique, comprehensive preventive plans for each of her patients.
Dr. Choi also understands that any health condition can strike an emotional part of patients. For this reason, spending enough time with her patients is particularly important to her. She enjoys explaining complexities of evaluation and having discussions of available management options. Dr. Choi likes to develop meaningful relationships with her patients as it gives her rewarding stimulus for practicing medicine.
